Joe Trippi Afterword

When I read the afterword in Trippi's book I really felt sorry for him, in several ways. First because of his health condition and second because he kinda missed the big revolution. He had a really great campaign with Dean in 2004 but he was not really part of the presidential race in 2008. The way Obama's campaign developed must have been Trippi's vision back then in 2004. The way democray worked was exactly what he had in mind.
In the afterword he talks about the change of media usage especially about the increase of bloggers. that is the greatest development because there are many million bloggers now who connect through the internet. Trippi calls it the blogosphere. for him those bloggers are most important in the presdential race, they decide which way the campaign is going. this is the start of bottom-up campaigns which are developed by the people and follow their ideas and only the people decide who will be a candidate and not the money.
The social networks become more important and a lot of people connect with others and this connection creates a democracy itself. People want to talk about their thoughts and create their own stuff on the internet. they simply participate!
For me it seems that the media is unstoppable right now. I learn new things every week and I am sure that until the next campaigns in 2012 there will be even new stuff to participate

Deanie Babies

The Deanie Babies were some really great phenomenon back in 2004. The young people started being involved in political campaigning. Even if they were not that political interested. Here is a nice article about the Deanie Babes http://www.thenation.com/doc/20040329/kamenetz
In my eyes this engagement and voulunteer work is really great. I actually cannot imagine that in Germany, though. Not a lot of people would leave school or University to work for a political candidate. The interest in being political active is not that great, most young people do not even care about politics at all.
The Deanie Babies helped to start the internet revoultion in campaining and this trend went on with the Obama campaign. Young people started being political active more and more. Sometimes I just wonder how the internet just helped to get people being involved again and work as a volunteer.

Users around the world

Last class we talked about what kind of internet users there are. there are huge differences between the age, the sex and especially the different countries. Young women use the internet very often and they participate more than men. Those often just are passive internet users and they like to watch whatildren.d ch is going on on the internet. In the US a lot of older people started using the internet to stay in touch with their family members, especially their grand children.
To find out more about users around the world, I found this page http://www.internetworldstats.com/top20.htm which shows how the internet is used around the world. I think it is not surprisng that the US and China have the first two places when it comes to percentage of internet user worldwide but I did not think that there have such a big margin to the others. On sixth place is Germany, the country with most internet users in Europe. It is also shown that the 20 TOP countries have almost 80% of the world percentage of internet user.
We should always remember that not all the people in the other countries have the possibility to use the internet. We should appreciate that we have the chance to be on-line every day!
