Joe Trippi Afterword

When I read the afterword in Trippi's book I really felt sorry for him, in several ways. First because of his health condition and second because he kinda missed the big revolution. He had a really great campaign with Dean in 2004 but he was not really part of the presidential race in 2008. The way Obama's campaign developed must have been Trippi's vision back then in 2004. The way democray worked was exactly what he had in mind.
In the afterword he talks about the change of media usage especially about the increase of bloggers. that is the greatest development because there are many million bloggers now who connect through the internet. Trippi calls it the blogosphere. for him those bloggers are most important in the presdential race, they decide which way the campaign is going. this is the start of bottom-up campaigns which are developed by the people and follow their ideas and only the people decide who will be a candidate and not the money.
The social networks become more important and a lot of people connect with others and this connection creates a democracy itself. People want to talk about their thoughts and create their own stuff on the internet. they simply participate!
For me it seems that the media is unstoppable right now. I learn new things every week and I am sure that until the next campaigns in 2012 there will be even new stuff to participate

Deanie Babies

The Deanie Babies were some really great phenomenon back in 2004. The young people started being involved in political campaigning. Even if they were not that political interested. Here is a nice article about the Deanie Babes http://www.thenation.com/doc/20040329/kamenetz
In my eyes this engagement and voulunteer work is really great. I actually cannot imagine that in Germany, though. Not a lot of people would leave school or University to work for a political candidate. The interest in being political active is not that great, most young people do not even care about politics at all.
The Deanie Babies helped to start the internet revoultion in campaining and this trend went on with the Obama campaign. Young people started being political active more and more. Sometimes I just wonder how the internet just helped to get people being involved again and work as a volunteer.

Users around the world

Last class we talked about what kind of internet users there are. there are huge differences between the age, the sex and especially the different countries. Young women use the internet very often and they participate more than men. Those often just are passive internet users and they like to watch whatildren.d ch is going on on the internet. In the US a lot of older people started using the internet to stay in touch with their family members, especially their grand children.
To find out more about users around the world, I found this page http://www.internetworldstats.com/top20.htm which shows how the internet is used around the world. I think it is not surprisng that the US and China have the first two places when it comes to percentage of internet user worldwide but I did not think that there have such a big margin to the others. On sixth place is Germany, the country with most internet users in Europe. It is also shown that the 20 TOP countries have almost 80% of the world percentage of internet user.
We should always remember that not all the people in the other countries have the possibility to use the internet. We should appreciate that we have the chance to be on-line every day!

The Bradley Effect

I have never heard about that before but I think it is an important issue that needs to be discussed. The Bradley effect is well explained here:
" The Bradley effect, less commonly called the Wilder effect, is a proposed explanation for observed discrepancies between voter opinion polls and election outcomes in some US government elections where a white candidate and a non-white candidate run against each other. The effect refers to a supposed tendency on the part of some voters to tell pollsters that they are undecided or likely to vote for a black candidate, and yet, on election day, vote for his or her white opponent. It was named for Tom Bradley, an African-American who lost the 1982 California governor’s race despite being ahead in voter polls going into the elections ".

In my eyes this effect was really important during the 2008 presidential race. People feared that Obama only got good polls because he was a black man. I understand that lots of people would like to say they will vote for a black person just because not to be seen as a racist. Especially because the US have a bad history with the black slaves. However, I think that our times should not talk about races but about the ability of a presidential candidate, whether black or white. The same could be said because of Hilary Clinton as a female candidate. People would say they vote for her because she is a woman and they want to be seen as a open person that is for equality when it comes to men and women in politics. For me the only important thing to about is the political part and it does not matter if the person is black or white or a woman or a man. People should not pay that much attention to things like the Bradley-Effect, they should instead decide because of their personal feelings and preference.

What kind of tech user am I?

I was doing a test on the internet about what kind of tech user I am. http://www.pewinternet.org/Participate/What-Kind-of-Tech-User-Are-You.aspx I did the test twice with different initial situations. The first time I imagined what I was like at the beginning of class in terms of the internet and other technical stuff.
The result was that I am "Drifting Surfer". That means I am an infrequent internet user who only gathers basic information. The digital resources are not the center how I get information, stay in touch with friends or do my job.
In my eyes this result does exactly describe myself at the beginning of the class. For me the internet was just a nice medium to find out a lot of information and to check my emails but it was not that important to me to stay in touch with people. I think that staying in touch with people is more worth if you talk in real life or meet each other. Although I have to say that it is an easy way to stay in touch with a huge amount of people.
The second time I did the test I was doing it from my point of view today I got a different result. Now it says I am an "Ambivalent Networker" which means that technical tools are important for me to run my social life. I also think that sometimes the connectivity is too intrusive.
This result is matching, too. I noticed that because of this class I spend more time on the internet. I have a blog now and I research a lot for it and write my own ideas down. I also watch more stuff on youtube which I never used to do before.
however, sometimes I still believe that it is a waste of time to spend so much time on the internet because you cannot stop that easily. You find more and more information and you open a lot of new pages and then you do not realize how much time went by already.
As a final result I would say that I like to be on the internet and love getting a lot of information but I do not rely so much on it. I still know there are more important things than spending my whole time on the internet. Real people are more important to me than all the social networks.

Joe Trippi

The 2008 presidential race was outstanding and it was something like a revolution because it was mostly an internet campaign by Obama. But, he was not the one who started using the internet for campaiging. The one who did use it for the first time was Howard Dean in 2004, initialized by Joe Trippi. He had this brilliant idea to use the internet and get the people involved. In his book " The revolution will not be televised" he described his way as a camapign organizer and it is a really interesting story, especially when he talks about the Dean campaign. He probably never thought that his idea would turn out to be so revolutionary and he basically gave the impulse for Obama to use the internet to reach everyone. Although Dean was not that succesful in the pre-presidential race he developed something special in terms of campaigning.
Today Trippi is a really important man and a lot of people still ask him for help. He just has the ideas and is willing to to work really hard. he even risks his health to work. He loves his job but he often hates it, too. It seems that he has a love-hate-relationship with his job. he cannot resist taking a job although he knows how much work it is.
Joe Trippi is a really important person in the process of the internet as a medium for political activities!

Internet Revolution in Iran

The people in Iran use the internet for reporting over the demonstrations going on. Other media like television and newspaper are controlled by the government but the internet is still free and so many people upload their videos and talk about the actual situation in Iran right now. Even the international TV stations get their information from twitter or youtube.

That kind of revolution in Iran shows how democracy is lived. all the young people want to change something and their way is the internet. People all over the world know about the latest actions happening in Iran. The whole world is part of what is happening. Because their actions are noticed from many people on the web it encourages them to write even more. We should all encourage those people by reading their stuff and giving positive feedback!!

Social networks

Social networks become more and more important these days and I just wonder why these networks have such a power! Personally I only use studivz.de and mostly for being in touch with people from University. It is an easy way to organize meetings or to share things about the same classes. For me it fulfills the function of a student network in a good way. Of course sometimes I use it for other things, too, for example looking at my friend's photos but this is just a side effect.
I do not like to write messages with people that I have not seen for long time (some people from school for example), it is basically just stupid small talk like "what are you up to, how is University..." and after writing one or two messages we never talk again. For me this is useless and kinda a waste of time. However, there are some other good social networks, too. Especially when it comes to school/student networks or business networks. Basically networks that help communicate with people that share the same interests.
Social networks can be dangerous though if people have wrong identities and try to betray that way. You never know who the person at the other side of the computer is and if that person is talking to you honestly. I am actually a careful person and I never tell much about myself. Still, I do not think that it is easy to live without social networks these days, especially for young people. there are so many information going around over these networks and it really helps us in our everyday life. And if you do not participate you are
The first social networks on the internet started in 1985 which means that these networks are not ideas of recent years. Twitter http://twitter.com/ is one of the recent ones and combines a lot of functions in one "tool". It becomes really popular these days. I found a nice article that tells about how twitter is used in Iran. http://diepresse.com/home/politik/aussenpolitik/487599/index.do?direct=486568&_vl_backlink=/home/politik/aussenpolitik/index.do&selChannel
It is amazing that it is possible to follow the actions that happen right now. you get even more the feeling that you are "live" at places where something happens. You get the latest news every minute.
It is sad that not all people in the world access to the internet. The ones without are kinda excluded from the world because they do not know what is happening, especially if countries block websites for the people.
The internet and with it the social networks create a really great community where people from all over the world share information. The world becomes more interconnected because of that.

Election in the USA

Today when we talked about the election system in the states and I noticed that I never knew much about it. It is a really complex system and I do not think that a lot of people in the states know how it really works. In the US the presidential candidate with the most votes wins the election. It is already enough if he has a few more votes than the other candidate. this is a big difference to other election systems like the one we have in Germany. There the candidate needs a total majority, which means that at least 51% of the votes have to be for one candidate. If that does not happen in first round there is a second round in which the two candidates with the most votes compete against each other and finally the one with the total majority wins.
An important thing in the states are the caucuses. I found a definition on the internet: " a closed meeting of a group of persons belonging to the same political party or faction usually to select candidates or to decide on policy" I actually never heard about that before I read the book by Joe Trippi "The Revolution will not be televised" http://www.amazon.de/Revolution-Will-Not-Televised-Everything/dp/006156107X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books-intl-de&qid=1245161134&sr=8-1 This book really explains a lot about the election system especially what happens behind the scenes. I really enjoyed reading it.
However, coming back to the system. I actually did not find a really good link that explains the system... but I found a funny video on youtube that explains the system :-)
I wonder how many people in the states do actually know how the system works. It is funny that people vote for the candidate they want to be president on their ballot paper but actually the votes come from the electors and not from the people directly. For me that does not sound like democracy...
well, if I have time someday maybe I will read more about it :-)
Something funny at the end!!

History becomes alive on the internet

I am going to write a thesis paper at the end of the course and it will be about John F. Kennedy and Obama. I want to compare them by looking at their campaigns and how they used the media for it. When Kennedy ran for presidency in 1960 the "new" medium TV was used for the first time in a campaign. Therefore the first presidential debate was held on TV which was a really great thing back then.
By researching about Kennedy on the internet ( I have to say that I did not know much about him before) I really found some interesting stuff and I spent hours reading articles about Kennedy also in comparison with Obama. The internet makes it possible to get so many information about a topic... However, the best thing I explored where videos on youtube. I actually did not spend that much time on that site before so it was really exciting for me to see how many videos there were especially the old ones. I watched speeches by Kennedy, the tv debate and also how he was shot. It was so interesting to see these old things from about 1960 on the internet. It felt like getting a real insight into that history. That way it is even fascinating to learn something about "boring history". I really like that kind of studying more than reading old history books. On the internet history becomes alive and if people would spend more time watching serious stuff on youtube they could know alot of things. Especially when it comes to politics it is a really good source, you always have the latest news on youtube and you can catch up to what happens in the world right now. There is even an own youtube site for people interested in politics http://www.youtubepolitics.org/ lots of great stuff.
If you need information for University stuff from the internet you should consult youtube, there are probably the best information.

That is just "Delicious"

I was preparing a handout about a new media tool called "delicious" http://delicious.com/. I never heard about that before and it is was really interesting to find out what the tool is about. With delicious you can bookmark websites and you can see those from every computer by just logging in to that website. Therefore it is really comfortable especially if you find exciting websites on the internet and you have not enough time to read everything, delicious will memorize that for you and you can read it later where ever you are at that moment. And if you are at a public computer you can still save your favorite websites.
I personally do not use these bookmarking services yet because I am only working with my own laptop and therefore I can bookmark on the computer which is easier for me because I cannot remember so many passwords :-) anyways, I still like the idea of delicious to share bookmarks. Especially for students that service is great to exchange interesting websites. That way it is more easy to prepare work for classes at University and to always have one's favorite websites together on one website.
Another additional service is that popular websites will be shown on delicious, too. That way you can discover new interesting things that you would not have found otherwise.

Maybe I am going to use these services from now one. I kinda convinced myself by writing this blog entry :-) If you are interested in services for bookmarking then you should consult this website http://social.front.lv/ to see what kind of bookmarking services are provided on the internet and which one you would like to use. Those tools are especially useful for bloggers :-) At least the website says so. In my eyes it is nice to have many tools together. That way you can look at all of them and decide which one you like the most or which one is the most useful website for your needs. It is kinda weird that so many services for bookmarking exist because they mostly have the same tools... anyways, it seems like they become more popular these days...
I would really advise you to check out some of these tools, maybe this is what you really need... :-)

new media and old media - we need both

I think it is really interesting to see how many new media tools there are. I found a website which shows some new tools I have never heard before (and I know many from class already)
http://www.masternewmedia.org/new_media/new_media_tools/best_new_media_tools_of_the_week_20061217.htm
It is crazy what kind of tools we have these days but I personally think that it is already too much. People spend so much time on the internet and with new media tools that real relationships become less intensive. In my eyes it is a dangerous development if people rather be on the internet talking with people they have met there instead of having relationships in the real world. To find out more about new tools check out these blogs.
http://en.wordpress.com/tag/new-media-tools/
I am really curious what the future has to offer. I cannot imagine what else will be offered to us, seems like the internet is growing so fast that we cannot even follow all the developments.

Although I actually prefer "old media" in most cases I have to say that the new media tools are useful, too. It is amazing how much we can learn from all the information on the internet and I think people will become smarter in the future because there is such an easy access to information. For example, the voting for the European Parliament is coming up and a lot of information are conveyed over the internet and that really helps people to be informed about the parties even if they do not read newspapers or watch news on television.

As a conclusion I would say that the new media tools can be really helpful but we should not rely on them all the time and still experience the "real world".

How could people have lived without the internet??

The internet is just an amazing inventions. Today on my way home from University I was just thinking about all the stuff I still have to do this week and most of them have to do with the internet. It is kinda freaky how much we depend on that thing and no one in my age could imagine to live without the internet.
It is not even possible to be a student at the University without the internet. For me the internet is not that important when it comes to social contacts and networks but I really enjoy all the information on the internet. If I think about what I use the internet for it is a long list. I go shopping on the internet, make reservations for a restaurant, apply for a job, find information about whatever I want to, I can watch TV and so many things more.
I think we are so lucky to live in that communication society. I personally cannot imagine to live without the internet and I cannot believe how, for example, my parents used to live without that technology...
I even have a class now where we talk most of time about the internet...
Look at these websites. I found them at random... http://www.endoftheinternet.com
/http://www.shibumi.org/eoti.htm
I think it is kinda funny to think about the end of internet, for me the internet is some endless thing that has no end and no beginning...
here are some more of those weird pages.... http://www.internetfirstpage.com/
http://www.kygallery.com/first.html
ok, if there is a last page of the internet, why are there different ones??
As a result of all that stuff I just think that too many people spend too much time on the internet with useless stuff...

Google: danger?

Last semester I was taking an economics class and I had to read a text about google. It was called "Dangers posed by Google" and it was really shocking what kind of information Hermann Maurer offered in that text.
I tried to find some information on Google about him and his book from which the text was taken. Of course there were not as many information as I found on ask.com :-)
In my eyes it is important to consider the bad sides of new media, too. We enjoy all the new media services and leave a lot of information about ourselves everywhere in the internet, so that a lot of people know things about us. It could be dangerous if people misuse our information. We should think about what we want other people to know about us and we should not surf revealing too much about us.
here are really two good links
http://www.millionface.com/l/privacy-concerns-about-google-analytics/
http://tihane.wordpress.com/2007/09/20/herman-maurer-keynote-at-ectel07/ .
I hope you enjoyed the texts and maybe you try to be more carefully while being on the internet.

Swing vote

Last week I watched a movie called Swing Vote. I have never heard about it before but I really liked it. It was released in the US last year before election but it was not in the german movie theatres. You should watch the trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWodSDYgfXA, read the plot summary http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swing_Vote_(2008_film) or even watch the whole movie because it is really funny and still has a lot of messages for the people. It encourages people to vote and to speak up.
It is not that realistic situation to have one person's vote which decides who will become the next president but there is that great message to it that every vote counts and can change something. I think that it was an important movie for the people in the US who do not vote.
Another point was also great. The Republican president and the Democratic candidate tried so hard to get this one vote that they started a whole campaign for this guy Bud. They watched him the whole day and every thing Bud did or said was taken into their TV ads and finally the two candidates even changed their polities. The President was suddenly for gay marriage and the Democratic candidate was against abortion. However, they noticed themselves that it is not worth giving up their own beliefs. It is an open end because we do not know who Bud will vote for...

This is a definition for Swing vote. I think it is interesting to know that.

Swing vote is a term used to describe a vote that may go to any of a number of candidates in an election, or, in a two-party system, may go to either of the two dominant political parties. Such votes are usually sought after in elections, since they can play a big role in determining the outcome.
A swing voter or floating voter is a
voter who may not be affiliated with a particular political party (Independent) or who will vote across party lines. In American politics, many centrists, liberal Republicans and conservative Democrats are considered "swing voters" since their voting patterns cannot be predicted with certainty.
While the swing voter is ostensibly the target of most political activity during elections, in countries without compulsory voting the political parties know that the shift from one party to another is dependent only to a limited extent on swing voters. Another, arguably larger factor is the success of one party in comparison to another in getting out its core support. In a two-party system, those who become disillusioned with their favored party are more likely to vote
third-party or abstain than cross over.
A swing state (also, battleground state or purple state) in United States presidential politics is a state in which no candidate has overwhelming support, meaning that any of the major candidates have a reasonable chance of winning the state's electoral college votes. Such states are targets of both major political parties in presidential elections, since winning these states is the best opportunity for a party to gain electoral votes. Non-swing states are sometimes called safe states, because one candidate has strong enough support that they can safely assume they will win the state's votes.
